How to Pick the Right Dress for a Maternity Photoshoot

What to Wear for Your Maternity Session

I know how stressful it can be to pick an outfit for your photo session. I’ve been there! For some reason, I can pick an outfit for my husband and daughter within a minute. No problem. However, when it comes down to choosing a dress for myself, I can search the internet for days. When I get asked about what to wear in a session, here are some tips I provide to my clients:

Choose an outfit that you feel comfortable AND confident in

When you feel confident in your outfit and feel it throughout the session that will definitely show in your final images. If you’re not comfortable with your arms, choose a long sleeve item. If you like showing your legs, go for a short dress.

Know how to dress based on session location

If your session will take place at home, coordinate with your home. Choose muted colours, and avoid logos. If your session will take place outdoors, be comfortable to move around. Keep it simple and comfy.

Choose neutral clothing

I almost always suggest wearing neutral tones. Any combination of cream, grey, and tan. You can almost never go wrong with a neutral colour palette, and it’ll match almost every setting.

Dress Up

This might be your only or your last pregnancy. Especially if you don’t get your photos taken often, why not dress up? Get your nails done, your hair and make up done, choose a dress you normally wouldn’t wear. Spoil yourself.

If you don’t want to invest in a maternity dress, there are so many bump friendly dresses out there you can wear after pregnancy as well. Here are some of my favourite brands with maternity and bump friendly outfits:
